BSI

By combining color and material attributes, BSI+ lights up even invisible defects in your product. Biometric Signature Identification (BSI+) technology combines color and material attributes to clearly identify what's good and what's bad in your products. Whether you apply it to pre-sort, regular sort, or reverse sort, BSI+ delivers an extremely concentrated reject stream while enabling high capacity.

What is BSI+?

TOMRA’s Biometric Signature Identification is a hyperspectral spatial scanning technology. It uses 32 signals to inform our machine on the color and other material attributes structure of the product including oils, and moisture content. The result is new possibilities for detecting foreign materials and quality defects.

BSI+ lasers can be set up using a wide variety of configurations depending on whether you apply it to:

  • Large foreign materials (soy, corn, bones, sticks, stones);
  • Quality defects (allergens, mold, cross contamination, aflatoxin); or
  • A combination of foreign material and quality defects

Fast facts:

  • Started in 1996 with 1st generation BSI developed  for TOMRA Recycling
  • +/- 4,000 TOMRA sorters in the field using BSI technology
  • Currently 5th generation BSI+ designed for food industry

Where does BSI+ belong in your line?

Achieve a highly-concentrated reject stream

Place the TOMRA 5C in your pre-sort position to  minimize the good in your reject stream and accept with a significantly reduced defect load.

Explore BSI+ for IQF

IQF Vegetables
Sorts for quality and foreign bodies (even glasses, metals, and black foreign materials) and becomes even more targeted towards EVM and FEVM.

Explore BSI+ for nuts

Peanuts
BSI tackles soy, corn, bones, teeth, white plastics – and quality defects like mold and shrivelled peanuts.
Almonds
High contrast easily highlights shell, hull, and sticks as well as quality defects like mold and insect damage.
Hazelnuts
False rejects caused by skin on the hazelnuts are significantly lower – and BSI eliminates quality defects like mold, shrivelled produce, insect bites, and rotten hazelnuts.
Walnuts

Identifies certain mold types and shrivelled walnuts.

Pistachios
Sort sticks and shells from the pistachios. Plus, BSI+ tackles quality defects including white shrivelled pistachios, mold, insects bites and blemishes like brown, grey, and visible yellow stains on in-shell pistachios.
