TOMRA in Norway

Where the resource revolution began

Norway is TOMRA’s home market and the birthplace of deposit return. Since 1972, TOMRA has been at the centre of Norway’s recycling revolution — a system that now achieves a 97% container return rate.

Norway’s Deposit Return System

Norway’s Infinitum deposit return system covers all PET bottles and aluminium cans sold in Norway. Consumers pay a deposit of NOK 2.50 (small containers) or NOK 3.00 (large containers) at point of purchase, refunded in full when they return the empty container to a TOMRA reverse vending machine.

The system has been operating since 1972 and today achieves a national return rate consistently above 97% — one of the highest in the world for any deposit return scheme. More than 600 million containers are collected per year through approximately 3,500 reverse vending machine locations nationwide.

TOMRA in Norway

TOMRA Systems ASA is headquartered in Asker, just outside Oslo. The Norwegian operation serves as TOMRA’s global R&D centre for reverse vending technology, and the Infinitum partnership provides a live test environment for new machine features and software updates before global rollout.
