Hero Block Turn Every Container Into an Opportunity

Deposit return schemes that deliver above 95% collection rates

Governments and beverage producers worldwide are turning to deposit return systems to dramatically increase collection rates for plastic bottles, cans and glass. TOMRA leads the way with a full end-to-end DRS portfolio.

Rich Text Block What is a Deposit Return Scheme?

A deposit return scheme is a system in which consumers pay a small deposit on a beverage container at the point of purchase. When they return the empty container to a reverse vending machine (RVM) or manual collection point, the deposit is refunded. This financial incentive drives return rates far above those of kerbside recycling alone.

DRS systems have proven highly effective across Europe and beyond — countries like Norway, Sweden, Germany and Finland regularly achieve return rates above 90%. The quality of material collected through DRS is significantly higher than through mixed collection, making it far more valuable for recyclers.
