    The home of deposit return — and the technology behind it

    The Nordic countries are home to the world’s most successful deposit return schemes. Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark collectively achieve return rates above 90% — a model the rest of the world is now following.

    World-Leading Deposit Return Performance

    The Nordic countries were among the first in the world to implement deposit return schemes at national scale. Norway’s scheme, operated by Infinitum using TOMRA infrastructure, has been collecting above 90% of all beverage containers since the 1990s. Today the national return rate consistently exceeds 97%.

    Sweden’s Returpack system, also powered by TOMRA, covers the entire country with more than 5,000 reverse vending machine locations in supermarkets, convenience stores and transport hubs. Finland’s Palpa system achieves comparable results, including glass bottle collection at rates above 90%.
